Multi-State Physician Assistant Licensure Compact Activated

Written by ProAssurance | Jun 6, 2024 3:21:00 PM

Licensure compacts expand access to care across state lines by allowing those with a single multistate license to provide care in all participating compact states. This concept has proven successful for physicians with 35 states and DC now participating in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, and for nurses with 39 states participating in the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Physician Assistant (PA) licensure compact was first introduced by legislation in late 2022 and by the end of 2023 three states joined the compact, however this would not take effect until it was enacted by a seventh participating state.

On April 4, 2024 Virginia became the seventh state to join the compact upon the signing of HB324 by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin thus activating the licensure compact. The anticipated timeframe for operationalization of the compact is expected to be 18 to 24 months, at which point PAs licensed in a participating state may apply for a multistate license. To join the compact, states must enact language outlined in the PA Compact Model Legislation.
